Mark Baden Career
Mark began working as the chief meteorologist for WISN 12 in 1997. His fascination with weather began at a young age and continues to this day. Wisconsin’s ever-changing weather feeds his weather obsession. Among Mark’s several weather honors is a local and state Emmy for flood coverage in 2008 and a Wisconsin Broadcasters Association best weathercast award in 2009.
Milwaukee Magazine has named the Weather Watch 12 squad the most reliable area forecaster. Mark has had the opportunity to cover the weather in our region and around the world. He had firsthand knowledge of the July 22nd flooding and was blogging live from the scene.
He was the first to announce that Interstate 43 was closed due to four feet of water flooding I-43 in Glendale, and he saw a police officer rescue a pregnant woman and her child from a flooded vehicle. The same storm washed a mattress across Port Washington Road directly in front of his house. For WISN, Mark has covered two hurricanes.
From Cocoa Beach, Florida, he saw the devastation caused by Hurricane Frances in 2004, and Hurricane Rita in Beaumont, Texas, in 2005. He has also seen tornadoes in Hartford, Utica, Illinois, and Kansas City, Missouri.
He’s been on countless storm chases across the Midwest and Great Plains, but according to Mark, he’s the world’s worst storm chaser. Mark formerly operated in Des Moines, Iowa, St. Louis, Missouri, Sioux City, Iowa, and Columbia, Missouri before moving to Milwaukee.
Every spring, Mark teaches a meteorology course at Concordia University in Mequon. He has been the emcee for COA’s Oscar Night America for the last 12 years. He organizes a number of charity activities for Children’s Hospital, such as the Sugarplum Luncheon and the Evening of Elegance.
Mark has co-hosted the Neighborhood House Invitational golf outing with sports director Dan Needles since 2005, and he also emcees the Neighborhood House’s Ray Richardson dinner. Mark has also been the honorary captain of Discovery World’s Denis Sullivan, a schooner based in Milwaukee.
