Lara was killed as the result of a small plane crash into Percy Priest Lake near Smyrna, Tennessee. His wife Gwen Shamblin Lara, the pilot, his wife’s son-in-law, and three members of the Lara’s church also died in the crash. The plane was a Cessna Citation ISP owned by the church.
